Programme for the day
10:00 Registration and coffee
10:30 Welcome opening address: Chris Moll, Head of Talent, Creative England
10:45 Session 1: Adapting Literature for the Screen:
What is it about books & plays that attracts film-makers and what do writers feel about having their work adapted or adapting the work of others? Chaired by Chris Gribble, CEO, Writers’ Centre Norwich - Chris leads a discussion exploring the problems and perils both for the original author and the writer approaching an existing work.
12:00 Session 2: Adapting Literature for the Screen: the Creative Challenges
Chaired by Michael Lengsfield, Tutor in Scriptwriting, UEA - Michael chairs a panel of creative talent all of whom have been involved in the process of adapting original work for film or television whether as screenwriter or producer. They discuss the prompts that lead them to particular material, and how to go about the business of translating a text into a visual medium. This session is a must for all practicing or emerging screenwriters.
13:00 Lunch break
14:00 Session 3: Adapting Literature for the Screen: the Practical Challenges
Chaired by Claire Chapman, Executive Producer and former head of UK Film Council’s US Office - Claire leads a panel of experienced production practitioners, agents and industry lawyers to discuss the practicalities of how adapted work gets made in the real world rather than the mind’s eye. Working with an existing story raises practical challenges. Do you need to acquire rights and if so how does that work? Where the story is familiar to an audience the screenplay often places demands on the production team so how are these challenges overcome?
15:00 Closing remarks: Lucy Ward write2screen project leader
15:15 Screening – The Last King of Scotland directed by Kevin Macdonald, starring Forest Whitaker & James McAvoy
17:00 Social/networking drinks at the Norwich Arts Centre - open to all those that attend the Day Conference and to the write2screen network
