Escalator Literature winner 2009: Dave Pescod
Biography:
Dave started writing by penning jokes for BBC radio, and monologues for in-flight entertainment. After running a greetings cards company he began writing again in 2002. Winning some short story competitions gave him the confidence to write prose, and his story Rising Laughter was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Other stories have been published in Dreamcatcher, Transmission and Route magazines. He was commended in The Writers’ and Artists Yearbook, and The Commonwealth Short Story competitions in 2009.
‘That’s all I wanted when he died, his joke book, to remember those funny nights by the fire when he would have us in stitches. Roy would copy him and steal some of his jokes. I didn’t mind, I thought it was flattery and Roy told them well. But, I never dared tell jokes at home, that was what Dad did, and I wouldn’t have dreamt of treading on his toes.’
