Worlds Literary Festival  

20-25th June 2009

A week with a host of international writers, comprising readings and events all across Norwich and Norfolk.

International Readings

Sat 20th, Mon 22nd, Tues 23rd, Thurs 25th June 2009, Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library Express Area, 5 – 6pm, FREE.

Dip into the world of international writing with this set of readings taking place as part of our Worlds literary festival and providing a taste of the thriving writing scene from India and across the world.

Free Readings Around Norfolk

Worlds in Translation is taking place at libraries in Norwich, Cromer, Dereham and North Walsham, offering you the opportunity to meet an interntional writer and hear them read, then  discuss their work and the art of translating it.

Debut

Tuesday 23 June, Norwich Arts Centre, 8pm, £5

An evening of words and music with some of the hottest young writers around. Featuring Joe Dunthorne (Submarine), Jenn Ashworth (A Kind of Intimacy) and Chris Killen (The Bird Room) as well as musicians Girl in a Thunderbolt and Rory McVicar, (whose new album is out now).

Connecting Worlds

Wednesday 24th June, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts , Worlds Arts and Museology Court, 5.30 – 8.00, Free

Join us for an evening of culture and international writing with Geoff Dyer, Chenjerai Hove, Robin Hemley and Mansur Rajih. The writers will read, talk and answer your questions in an evening designed to inspire you with tales from across genres and from across the world.

PROSE WORKSHOPS

This June we are hosting three creative writing workshops on contemporary crime fiction, non-fiction writing and the blurring boundaries of fact and fiction as part of our Worlds festival. Led by three well respected writers, these workshops are perfect for those looking to sharpen their technique and broaden their horizons with experienced workshop leaders.

Literary Crime Fiction with Henry Sutton Monday 22 June │ 2pm – 5pm │ £25

Norfolk based writer Henry Sutton will be looking at literary aspects of contemporary crime fiction; crime, suspense, thriller and psychological narrative.

Writing Fiction with Naomi Alderman Tuesday 23 June │ 2pm – 5pm │ £25

Orange Award winning novelist Naomi Alderman will deliver a workshop on the conflicting nature of fact and fiction within  creative fiction writing.

Memory and the Imagination with Robin Hemley Thursday 25 June │ 2pm – 5pm │ £25

Explore the role of imagination and re-creation of events in the contemporary memoir with the Guggenheim writer and Director of the Non-Fiction programme at the University of Iowa, Robin Hemley.

Refugee Week Events, Norwich

Refugee Week takes place across the UK, celebrating the contribution of refugees to the community. Writers’ Centre Norwich has helped coordinate organisations and individuals in Norwich in putting together a diverse programme of events. Click on the above link for full listings.

Refugee Week: Launch Event

Sunday 14th June, The Curve, Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library, Norwich

Writers’ Centre Norwich hosts a reception to mark the launch of Refugee Week in Norwich, featuring the Mayor, BBC Voices, Giles Foden (The Last King of Scotland) and exiled writer Chenjerai Hove.  Open to the public.

Refugee Week: Shahrazad Digital Stories Screening

Sunday 14th June – Sunday 20th June, Fusion @ The Forum, Norwich

Come into the Forum’s new cinematic space to see films made  by young people in Norfolk and across Europe on the  topic of home and identity, the result of our Shahrazad digital storytelling project.

Refugee Week: Asylum Dialogues

Join Writers’ Centre Norwich at the Norwich Playhouse on Tuesday 16th June for a performance of documentary play Asylum Dialogues, highlighting some of the many acts of solidarity shown by British people towards refugees living alongside them.

Refugee Week: Three Short Plays by Harold Pinter

Friday 19th June, The Curve, Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library, Norwich

Norwich Theatre Royal Actors Co present rehearsed readings of One for the Road, Ashes to Ashes and Press Conference – three extraordinary short plays about torture, abuse and autocratic regime by the Nobel Prize winning playwright Harold Pinter in the Forum’s new space The Curve.

Family Fun day at Eaton Park

Sunday 21st June, Eaton Park, off South Park Avenue

To celebrate the finale of Refugee Week, Writers’ Centre Norwich are organising a family day out at Eaton park that will include entertaining activities for all comers. Bring along your picnic and enjoy activities ranging from storytelling for young people, poetry readings, face painting, carnival costumes and a good helping of traditional brass band music.

FREE WRITING WORKSHOPS AROUND NORFOLK
Various Locations, 23rd – 25th May 2009, 10am – 4pm

We have commissioned three writers to work on a variety of prose and poetry exercises and workshops in beautiful Norfolk churches as part of the Art Alive project, where 25 of the most historic churches across Norfolk will be opening their doors throughout the bank holiday weekend. All experience levels are welcome.

With Tim Clare, Helen Mort, Molly Naylor, Dean Parkin and Hannah Walker. A showcase of diverse live lit performances including Tim Clare’s quest to discover performance’s lost innocence in the underground world of the open mic night, and Molly Naylor’s  humourous exploration of her twenties, set against the backdrop of classic films. Part of the Norwich and Norfolk Festival.

Blogging Norfolk: a digital map for a digital age

This St George’s Day (23rd April) BBC Norfolk and Writers’ Centre Norwich are asking the people of Norfolk to send in stories of their day in Norfolk to add to a unique interactive digital map that will be available for the whole world to see. We want you to post the stories of your day onto your blog, send photos to our Flickr page, join our Facebook site, Twitter with us and link to us or even email the stories to us.

Martin Amis: Writing and Freedom

Thursday 7th May, Norwich Playhouse, 7-9pm.

Joined in conversation by Robert McCrum, Amis will speak about the topic of The Writer and Freedom. Amis will read from his work, and discuss his forthcoming novel The Pregnant Widow, published later this year. There will also be a book signing supported by Jarrolds.

POETRY WORKSHOPS

As part of our writer’s services, we are offering a poetry workshop a month from April looking at ways that you can move up to the next level in your work or gain another string to your bow. We are also offering travel burseries for those of you outside Norfolk, so don’t let distance put you off.

Form and Performance with Tim Turnbull Sat 4 April | 11am – 5pm | £40

This April Forward nominee Tim Turnbull delivered a workshop on how the formal aspects of poetry relate to performance; allowing any poet to develop an engaging performance technique, no matter what their poetic style.

Comedy Writing with Josie Long Sat 30 May | 11am – 5pm | £40

Develop your comic voice with Josie Long, who writes for Skins, and who offers a workshop which could open up the world of stand-up poetry.

A Thousand Words: Poetry in Pictures with Ross Sutherland Sat 13 June | 11am – 5pm | £40

If you’re looking for new creative outlets you will benefit from a session with Ross, who will show how your poetry can develop visually in the digital world.
