Neil Astley

This workshop offers a nuts-and-bolts examination of the whys and wherefores of getting poetry published in books and magazines, led by Bloodaxe’s editor, Neil Astley. He has published hundreds of poets but has also had to reject the rest by the skipload and so can offer an informed, insider’s view of poetry publishing and bookselling.

The session involves a general reality check as well as individual attention to particular concerns and questions. Not to be missed. Participants also receive free entry to the evening’s Cafe Writers event, see www.cafewriters.org.uk

Neil Astley is editor of Bloodaxe Books, which he founded in 1978, and was given a D.Litt by Newcastle University for his pioneering work. He has edited nearly a thousand poetry books and published several bestselling anthologies, including Staying Alive, Being Alive and Earth Shattering, and two collaborations with Pamela Robertson-Pearce, Soul Food and In Person: 30 Poets. He won a Gregory Award for his own poetry, and has published two poetry collections, Darwin Survivor and Biting My Tongue, and two novels, The End of My Tether (shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award), and The Sheep Who Changed the World. He was also a co-editor of Stand magazine for three years, an organiser of readings for Morden Tower and Newcastle Literary Festival, and a board member of the Poetry Book Society.
