The fourth edition of Latitude is set to be mesmerising. With thirteen arenas hosting a range of artists of incredible talent, it’s definitely worth a punt and we are delighted to be involved, presenting the talents of Francesca Beard and the Trinidadian writer and performer, Roger Robinson in a special WCN poetry hour in the Poetry Arena.
Francesca Beard has been called ‘spine-tingling’ (Independent) and ‘The Queen of British Performance Poetry (Metro). Born in Malaysia, she represents contemporary British literature all over the world. She has a one-woman show, ‘Chinese Whispers’ and a children’s show, ‘Animal Olympics’.
Roger Robinson is a Trinidadian writer and performer who lives in London. He was one of 30 poets chosen for the New Generation Poets collection at the National Portrait Galleryn and his new book Suckle is due to be published in Jul 2009 . Up to 2000, Roger Robinson was programme co-coordinator of Apples and Snakes. He’s performed worldwide and is an experienced workshop leader and lecturer. He’s published a book of short fiction, Adventures in 3D (2001) and a poetry collection, Suitcase (2004).
The Latitude Poetry Arena (programmed by WCN’s Luke Wright) is one of the largest poetry events in the country and this year hosts performances and readings from Andrew Motion and Jackie Kay as well as Escalator 2009 winners Molly Naylor, Helen Mort and Tim Clare. Furthermore, it would be criminal for us not to mention that our very own staff member Martin Figura will also be gracing the poetry arena.
