Brand new resources and a brand new media player

Posted By: Edward Cottrell, 05 April 2011

This is my first post since I started working at Writers' Centre Norwich as the Creative Media Officer. Amongst other things, I've been spending time gathering resources to support workshops, making records of events and helping maintain the website.

The placement here lasts six months and is part of the DCMS Jerwood Creative Bursaries scheme funded by the DCMS and Arts Council England.  I've recently graduated with an MA in English Literature from Warwick University. To have the opportunity to go straight into paid work within the arts is incredible.

The central part of my role involves attending events assisting Writers' Centre Norwich with multimedia productions (this means filming and recording audio while sidestepping technical nightmares, with the help of Sam Ruddock). So far I've filmed showcases from the Well Versed pilots (which have been running in Norwich schools) and attended book launches for two writers: Guy Saville and Heidi Williamson.

Heidi was an early participant in some of the workshops run by Writers' Centre Norwich, while Guy Saville was the winner of the 07/08 Escalator competition. We’ve added a collection of media resources  from Heidi Williamson’s launch for Electric Shadow, and a recording of her poetry reading from the event in the Book Hive is also available:

For background on Heidi's past involvement with the culture of Norwich, listen to Henry's introduction:

Heidi also gave Leila from Writers' Centre Norwich an interview in which she talks about her history and development as a poet, sending off submissions, redrafting and more:

Here's a talk from a writer antipathetic to readings of his own work - Guy Saville. The second track beneath, from Chris Gribble, highlights the creative relationship between Guy and Writers' Centre Norwich, giving an insight into the novelist's productive processes in the form of email exchanges over time:
