Why Bill Thompson is nominated for the Prudential A&B Board Member of the Year

Our board member Bill Thompson has been nominated for the Prudential Arts and Business Board Member of the year award, so we'd like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about him and encourage you to Vote Bill! We'd also encourage you to tune into his world: as he's a good person to learn from.

When something happens in the digital or technological world you will often find that the person asked for a quote will be Bill. He's active right at the heart of new ideas, and is currently working with the BBC on their next big thing. He has a great track record - having successfully developed the Guardian’s online presence and worked globally as a digital guru.

As such, Bill was the obvious choice to drive our AmbITion project. AmbITion is an Arts Council digital technologies initiative and our project was about bringing us up to speed with the developments in the digital world and bringing learning and real change to our organisation.

Endlessly busy either in the physical or digital realm, we were overwhelmed by the amount of time that Bill found to help us with both the big conceptual ideas as well as the finer details (including constantly rebooting our interim website without grumbles at various hours of the day and night). Bill's experience in the media came in handy, as he knows how to explain the new and the complex in ways that are intelligable to all. And all he seemed to want in return was a good strong cup of coffee.

People who are willing to share their knowledge and give a bit of time are essential to small organisations like ours, and can make a real impact. Due to Bill’s expertise and energy we were able to make big changes at Writers' Centre Norwich: at every level. Surpassing our aim of developing a new website, Bill helped us develop strategic development plans; realise new staffing structures; design, commission and install new IT infrastructures and build a digital development plan to support its existing artistic aims. He offered endless hours of personal and technical support, advice and inspiration.
