Summer Reads 2011: Read Ghost Light with the Book Club

Date: 14/06/2011 Times: 6pm Prices: Free Location: Waterstone's Royal Arcade, Norwich

Information on the third of the Summer Reads 2011 Book Club Sessions.

Description

Come and read one or more of our six great reads this May-July and then air your views on them with other interested readers at our Summer Reads Book Club.

The club will run fortnightly from May in book shops and libraries around Norwich where you'll get to meet fellow readers and share your thoughts with others in lively, informal sessions. All sessions will be led by Writers' Centre Norwich's Sam Ruddock - a keen reader. You'll find yourself in a welcoming, inclusive environment with other people just as keen about reading as you are and you can come to all or just some of the sessions - it's up to you.

This week's book is Joseph O'Connor's Ghost Light:

Dublin 1907, a city of whispered rumours. A young actress begins an affair with a damaged older man, the leading playwright at the theatre where she works. Rebellious and flirtatious, Molly Allgood is a girl of the inner city tenements, dreaming of stardom in America. Her affair with playwright John Synge is quarrelsome, affectionate and tender - and firmly opposed by all.

Years later Molly recalls the defining affair of her life as she walks through London's streets, alone, but sustained by memories and an inspiring passion for existence.

Sam says:

"Hauntingly sad, yet packed with wit and invention; Molly's story will stay with me for a long time".
