About the workshop
If you have a completed novel or work in progress then here’s your chance to learn how to approach and secure an agent.
In the morning session Ed will give you an insight into what the Johnson & Alcock agency look out for and which approaches work and why. Ed will also take any of those burning questions you have about the industry, and will give you an overview of the role of an agent.
Before the workshop you’ll send in a 3000 word extract of your finished novel or novel in progress. Ed will then spend around 20 minutes with you, feeding back on your work and agent approach.
These workshops get snapped up quickly - apply today to get your professional read and a valuable one to one.
Apply for your place by sending a 2,000 word extract of your finished novel or novel in progress to Laura Stimson: laura.stimson[at]writerscentrenorwich.org.uk by Monday 5th March.
Selected writers will be asked to send up to 3,000 words, a covering letter and synopsis by Monday 19th March. Your extract should be representative of the novel, ideally in chronological form.
About the tutor
Ed Wilson has been an agent with Johnson & Alcock since 2007, and a director of the company since 2011. He first came to the agency as an intern, and in between worked in editorial roles at HarperCollins and a number of other publishers.
He has a diverse and developing list which encompasses exciting new writers, established and award-winning authors, and the majority of the agency’s Estates. Throughout, his list is defined by great writing in whatever form it comes.
In fiction, he looks for anything with originality and style. This includes upmarket commercial and literary fiction: books with an imaginative setting, strong narrative voice and compelling premise. He also likes intelligent crime and thrillers, and handles some crossover teen and YA writing, plus the odd quirky non-fiction title.
Ed is always on the lookout for more unusual books that transcend genre: strong stories with elements of noir, dystopia, or even science fiction. He also loves graphic novels, and has a couple of poets on his list.
Level: Advanced writers with a book to pitch who would like to pitch to agents, or who have previously approached agents but have had no success.
