Making Poems with Alan Jenkins
Saturday 24th April 2010 │10am – 4pm│Writers’ Centre Norwich, 14 Princes Street, Norwich│£60 / £40 conc.
‘Poetry is made of words, not ideas’: Mallarme. ‘Not a bad idea, why not make a poem out of it?’: Philip Larkin.
We all enjoy workshops that investigate the intricacies of poetry, but what about the bigger picture?
No matter which way the world turns, poems have to be made: Forward prize winning poet Alan Jenkins will lead you through a one-day Masterclass looking at your poetry and exploring the key ingredients that created it.
This is a great opportunity to gain constructive feedback from Alan, who has worked for many years as Deputy Editor and Poetry Editor on the TLS and has vast experience of teaching creative writing and leading workshops across the world. Furthermore, you will be learning amongst fellow poets who are looking for the same thing as you: knowledge, stimulation and encouragement.
Before the workshop you will submit two pieces of your poetry, indicating which one you would like to be discussed in the group. The morning will focus on introductions and discussion of some common assumptions or principles of poetry using specific poems chosen by Alan. The afternoon will look at the submitted work with a minimum of 10 minutes dedicated to each poem.
