Prose Fiction: Writing People and Places with Vicky Grut
Saturday 8th May 2010 │10am – 5pm│Writers’ Centre Norwich, 14 Princes Street, Norwich│£50 / £40 conc.
How do you make people and places come to life?
Stories and novels live or die by the credibility of their characters and settings. Do yours stand up? Would you like to hone your eye?
Whatever stage you’re at in your writing career, you’re bound to benefit from joining the Asham Award winning writer Vicky Grut for our day long workshop dedicated to looking at the issues presented by people and places.
The day will be practical and engaging, consisting of a mix of short readings from published works, discussion and on-the-spot writing exercises. You’ll look at the nuts and bolts of characterisation; the impact of sensory detail and the creative tension between character, setting and plot, avoiding static descriptive set-pieces and showing that character and setting are best conveyed in action.
Vicky is clearly a great person to lead you to better people and places. She won the Chapter One International Short Story prize in 2006, and an Asham Award in 2009. She is a prolific short-story writer and is also a very experienced writing instructor, having worked for The Literary Consultancy, Open University, Arvon and South Bank University - so you will be in very safe hands.
So, if you’d like to practice the practical skills needed to create evocative settings and engaging characters, then do book up now:
